History

The 436th Troop Carrier Group (USAAF) took part in the D-Day landings, the invasion of the South of France, Operation Market Garden and the Crossing of the Rhine.

The 436th was one of twelve groups to join the Ninth Air Force direct from the United States in the first half of 1944. It was activated in the US on 1 April 1943 and moved to Britain in December 1943-January 1944.

On D-Day the group dropped paratroops from the 82nd Airborne Division during the initial airborne attack. Later in the day and on 7 June it towed gilder-borne reinforcements to the beachhead.

In July 1944 the group sent a detachment to Italy to take part in Operation Dragoon, the invasion of the south of France. On 15 August it dropped paratroops and towed gliders into the invasion zone. It then flew supplies into the south of France, before spending a few days flying supplies around Italy.

In September 1944 the re-united group took part in Operation Market Garden, carrying paratroops of the 101st Airborne into battle.

On 24 March 1945, during the crossing of the Rhine, the group towed gliders to Wesel.

In late March the group was used to fly fuel to the advancing troops.

Between these major missions the group was used as a standard transport unit, flying supplies to the front and evacuating the wounded.

After the end of the war the group evacuated POWs from Germany. It was also used to train French paratroops.

The group returned to the US in August 1945 and was inactivated on 15 November 1945.
