Consolidated Liberator VIII

The Consolidated Liberator VIII was the RAF designation for late production B-24Js. The type equipped twenty three squadrons, although ten of those were post-war transport squadrons, leaving thirteen wartime operators of the aircraft. Of those squadrons, eight were UK based, seven operating with coastal command and one as a long range transport squadron. Four squadrons used the Liberator VIII from India, three using it as a bomber over South East Asia, and one as a transport unit. Finally No.614 Squadron based in Italy used the Liberator VIII for a mix of bombing and supply drop missions over northern Italy and the Balkans. The Liberator VIII was the last version of the Liberator to be used as a bomber by the RAF.

Consolidated B-24 Liberator (Crowood Aviation), Martin W. Bowman. A well balanced book that begins with a look at the development history of the B-24, before spending nine out of its ten chapters looking at the combat career of the aircraft in the USAAF, the US Navy and the RAF.
