The Nakajima Ki-80 was a version of the Ki-49 Donryu Army Type 100 Heavy Bomber designed for use by formation leaders. Two were built in October 1941, but they did not enter service.
Later in the war Nakajima decided to fit the 2,420hp Nakajima Ha-117 fourteen cylinder radial engine to the Ki-49. These engines were tested on the Ki-80. They were then installed on six prototypes of the Ki-49-III, built between March and December 1943, but the new type didn't enter mass production.
