Panzerkampfwagen III Medium Tank 1936-44, Bryan Perrett

Panzerkampfwagen III Medium Tank 1936-44, Bryan Perrett

New Vanguard 27

This entry in the New Vanguard series looks at the Panzer III, which for the first two and a half years of the Second World War was the only German-designed main battle tank, armed with a main gun designed to penetrate enemy armour at long range.

This is a good introduction to the subject, looking at the development of the Panzer III, the structure of the German Panzer forces, and the role the tank played in the early German successes in Poland, France and during the first year in Russia. It isn't the right book if you want a detailed technical examination of the differences between the thirteen different versions of the standard tank or the twenty-five or so other vehicles based on the same chassis, but that should hardy come as a surprise in a 48 page book!

As always the book is well illustrated, with a selection of unusual pictures, the normal set of colour illustrations and a superb cut-away diagram which I found of great use on several occasions.
