The start of Operation Cartwheel, a series of amphibious attacks on Japanese positions in the south and south west Pacific, aiming at the Soloman Islands

American troops land on Rendova Island, close to Munda on New Georgia, one of the first steps in Operation Toenails.

American troops land at Oloana Bay, on the south coast of Vangunu, and attack the Japanese base at Kaeruka. The Japanese pull back to Cheke Point and prepare to defend Wickham Anchorage.
