8in gun, USS Chicago (1885)
Here we see one of the 8in guns of the protected cruiser USS Chicago (1885) , which were carried in semi-protected positions along the sides of the ship, rather than in turrets. This view from the rear shows the gun mount, the armour protecting it from the flanks, and also the large size of opening required for the gun.
