Burning Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat on USS Cowpens (CVL-25)
Here we see Lt (JG) Alfred W Magee Jr leaving his burning Grumman F6F-3 after landing on the Independence class light carrier USS Cowpens (CVL-25) unaware that it was on fire! The picture was taken on 24 November 1943 during a series of raids on Japanese bases in the Gilbert Islands.
