This aerial picture of the Cleveland class light cruiser USS Denver (CL-58) has been signed by Captain Robert B. Carney, her commanding officer between 15 October 1942 and July 1943, when he was promoted to Rear Admiral and became Chief of Staff to Admiral Halsey. This picture shows the layout of the Cleveland class cruisers, with their 6in main guns in four triple gun houses (fore and aft), and 5in dual purpose guns in six twin gun houses - two behind the main guns and two on each side of the superstructure. We can also see the circular gun pits for anti-aircraft guns and the open aircraft hanger at the stern.

Covers the five classes of US Navy light cruisers that saw service during the Second World War, with sections on their design, weaponry, radar, combat experience. Nicely organised, with the wartime service records separated out from the main text, so that the design history of the light cruisers flows nicely. Interesting to see how new roles had to be found for them, after other technology replaced them as reconnaissance aircraft [read full review]
