Mainmast of USS Georgia (BB-15), c.1907
Here we see the original heavy military mast of the Virginia class battleship USS Georgia (BB-15), with the aft 12in/ 8in gun turret in front of it. The US Navy feared that these masts were becoming vulnerable to destruction from a single hit from a large shell, and replaced them with the stronger cage masts.
