Turret Cross Section, USS Illinois (BB-7)
Here we see a cross section of one of the Mark IV 13in gun turrets on the Illinois class battleship USS Illinois (BB-7). These were the first modern gun turrets installed on US battleships, replacing the circular turrets with vertical sides used on earlier batteships. The sloped front plate on the new turrets meant that the slots for the gun could be made much smaller.
