USS Marblehead (C-11) at Mare Island in black paint scheme
Here we see the Montgomery class unprotected cruiser USS Marblehead (C-11) in the Mare Island Dry Dock c.1900 in an unusual black paint scheme, with a new figurehead, probably replacing the original removed during the Spanish American War. This paint scheme didn't last, as other pictures from the 1900s show her with the more normal white hull.
