Here we see some of the crew of the Independence class light aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL-26) playing basketball in the forward elevator during a pause in the fighting in the Mariana Islands in June-July 1944. On the left jumping for the ball is the future President of the United States Lt Gerald Ford.
