Here we see the Montgomery class unprotected cruiser USS Montgomery (C-9) on trials at some point in the early 1890s. Smoke is only coming from one funnel, suggesting these weren't full speed trials. No guns can be seen - at this period ships often undertook early trials without them, giving a misleading idea of speed.
