USS Saipan (CVL-48) during Operation Icecap, 1948
Here we see the crew of the Saipan class light carrier USS Saipan (CVL-48) clearing snow and ice off the flight deck, probably during an attempt to rescue eleven airmen who had come down on Greenland late in 1948. The Saipan reached the area, but the airmen were rescued by a ski-equipped C-47 that landed on the island then used JATO equipment to take off again.
