Carved Headboard on USS San Francisco (C-5)
Here we see an elaborate carved headboard at the top of the amidships embarkation platform on the protected cruiser USS San Francisco (C-5). Note the foundation for one of her 6in guns at the left, yet to be added as this picture was taken when she was being fitted out in 1890.
