USS Vesuvius (1888) and USS Stirling, Boston, 1900
Here we see the dynamite gun cruiser USS Vesuvius (1888) (outboard) and the collier USS Stirling laid up at Boston in 1900. At the time the Vesuvius had been taken out of service because the dynamite guns were inaccurate and short ranged, while the Stirling was awaiting repairs. Both would return to service, although in the case of the Vesuvius only after the dynamite guns had been removed and torpedo tubes added.
