Dynamite Guns of USS Vesuvius (1888)

Dynamite Guns of USS Vesuvius (1888)
Here we see the barrels of the dynamite guns of the dynamite gun cruiser USS Vesuvius (1888). These guns used compressed air to fire shells filled with a form of dynamite that was more stable than normal, but still too volatile to be used in normal shells. The dynamite guns were very quiet and didn't produce the normal gun flash, so were ideal for night time bombardments, but were also short ranged and inaccurate and the idea was soon abandoned.
