USS Virginia (BB-13) with Cages Masts
Here we see the Virginia Class battleship USS Virginia (BB-13) after her original military masts had been replaced with cage masts. We also get a good view of the front of the unusual double-decker front main turret, with a twin 8in turret mounted on top of the main 12in turret and sharing the same front plate. When the ship was designed the main guns could only fire once every three minutes, so the 8in guns could fire in the gaps, but by the time they were in service the main guns could fire every 20 seconds, removing the gaps.
