USS Wisconsin (BB-64) with damaged bow, 1956

Here we see the damage caused to the Iowa class battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) when she collided with the destroyer Eaton (DD-510) in thick fog while operating off the Virginia Capes on 6 May 1956. The Eaton was badly damaged just in front of the bridge, but was saved by her first lieutenant, who connected the bow to the stern with anchor chains. The Wisconsin was repaired by replacing her damaged bow with the bow from her incomplete sister ship USS Kentucky (BB-66). As a result the Wisconsin was ready to return to sea on 28 June 1956, a very impressive achievement after such major damage.
