Bielefeld Railway Viaduct, 1945
This picture shows the gap blown in the Bielefeld Railway Viaduct by one Grand Slam and several Tallboy bombs dropped by Lancasters of No.617 Squadron. These large streamlined bombs were designed by Barnes Wallis with this sort of target in mind - they created mini-earthquakes that caused the viaduct to collapse. Conventional bombs had failed to have any impact, as the vast crater field shows.
