Corsairs on Carrier of British Eastern Fleet, c.1944
Here we see a number of Chance Vought F4U Corsairs being cleared from the deck of a carrier of the British Eastern Fleet at some point in the first half of 1944, in order to allow a patrol of Avengers to land. This picture was probably taken on HMS Illustrious, which served with that fleet from January 1944, and in May operated with the right mix of aircraft. Other carriers joined the Eastern Fleet in the summer of 1944, but probably not in time for this picture.
