Illustrious class carrier from above
This aerial picture of an Illustrious class aircraft carrier gives a clear view of several of her key features, including the rounded down 'lip' at the front of the flight deck, the location of her foreward lift, the size of her superstructure and the distinctive 'pillbox' guns used on some British carriers. There had an armoured roof level with the flight deck, protecting them from damage if an aircraft came off the deck above them.
