The Boeing-Stearman PT-18 was the USAAF designation for all Model 75 primary trainers powered by Jacobs engines. In 1940-41 there was a shortage of the Lycoming and Continental engines normally used on the PT-13 and PT-17 and so 150 Model 75 primary trainers were built with a 225hp Jacobs R-755-7 engine and with 1940 serial numbers. After this first batch the supply of the main engines improved and the Jacobs engine was reserved for other use, so no more PT-18s were built.
The PT-18 was a two seat single-bay biplane. The fuselage was built around a welded steel tube framework, the wings around a wooden framework, both fabric covered. It had a fixed undercarriage with single faired legs.
Six of these aircraft were later given night flying instruments and the designation PT-18A.
