The Douglas YO-48 was to have been a version of the O-46A observation aircraft powered by a Wright engine, but none were built.
The O-46A was the main production version of the family of Douglas monoplane observation aircraft that began with the O-31. The O-46 had a parasol wing, braced by two parallel struts, and was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1535-7 engine. It used a semi-monocoque fuselage, and had a high tail fin with an inset rudder.
The YO-48 would have been similar to the O-46, but powered by a 775hp Wright R-1670-3 radial engine. In 1936 Douglas were given a contract to convert the prototype XO-46 into the YO-48, but this was cancelled before the work was completed.
