The Morane-Saulnier M.S. 227 was the designation given to a single M.S. 225 used to test out a Hispano-Suize engine and 20mm cannon combination. The M.S. 225 was a parasol wing fighter that was ordered into limited production while more modern aircraft were under development. It was powered by a Gnome-Rhône radial engine, and armed with two 7.7mm machine guns.
Fifty five M.S. 225s were accepted by the Aviation Militaire (just before it became the Armée de l'Air). One of these aircraft was used to test a Hispano-Suiza 12Xcrs V-12 inline engine with a 20mm cannon mounted between the cylinder banks. In this configuration it was redesignated as the M.S. 227. This combination of inline engine and 20mm cannon was later used on the Morane-Saulnier M.S. 406.
