Great and Glorious Days, James Falkner

Great and Glorious Days, James Falkner

Marlborough's Battles 1704-09: Schellenberg, Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet

This book has a very simple focus - the campaigns and battles of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. After a chapter devoted to Marlborough's early life and a chapter explaining the background to his wars, we go straight into his first major campaign, ending three chapters later at Blenheim. Each campaign and each battle is examined in some detail.

This focus is the book's big strength. Falkner examines each of Marlborough's battles, picking out the critical points of each one. Each account is supported by at least one clear map. In a nice touch Falkner also desribes the modern battlefields, very useful for anyone looking to visit the site of one of Marlborough's victories.

This is a very well written work that helps to explain the victories of one of Britain's greatest generals.
