The Union Army 1861-65 (2) – Eastern and New England States, Ron Field

This volume in a series on the Union Army of the Civil War focuses on eleven eleven Eastern and New England States and the District of Columbia. Between them they provided 1.25 million men for the Union cause (an impressive 400,000 from New York alone!).

We start with a brief introduction that looks at the official regulations for uniforms, from the early days with a mix of grey and blue to the recommendation of a standard blue uniform based on that used by the regular army.

We then move onto the state chapters.  These start with a brief numerical introduction – number of men, casualties, regiments etc. The bulk of each chapter then looks at the details of the uniforms provided by those states, and how they changed over time. In most cases this involved an early use of grey, then a switch to blue for most units, with a few more colourful exceptions – most famously Zouave style with colourful trim on the blue base.

This should be a useful guide for the wargamer, allowing for the correct mix of colours for different state troops at different periods.
